Mother Lode Narratives; Author: Jessie Benton Fremont


Born at a time when women served the men in their lives, Jessie Benton Fremont first becane the head of her father Thomas Hart Benton's household in Washington DC during her years as a U.S Senator from Missouri. She later was the stabilizing and driving foce behind her dreamer husband, John Charles Fremont. During the late 1870's in a period when she was the main source of income for her family, she wrote a series of short stories dealing with her years living in California and on the Las Maripisas Grant.
