Stage to Yosemite, Recollection; Author: Annie Reynolds
The country was younger, California not yet a state, when at Coloma the discovery of a small piece of gold began a migration that helped fill the West. From this beginning rose the town of Mariposa and the discovery of a granite- walled Valley. Toward this Valley another rush began which would last longer than that for the gold and generate an untold wealth of visual satisfaction. This is the story of some who pushed ahead in a raw land and of others who gave their sweat and brawn to help the early visitors to Yosemite catch a scene whose marvel would forever enrich their lives. They are the stage drivers. Their time evoked, not continuity, but memories.
