Pushing through the dense, green mass of flowering plants that nearly covered the trail, I glanced down and saw a small portion of a snake's body 6 inches from my left foot. We both froze in place. Its body had the markings of a rattlesnake, but I couldn't see its head or tail. If I took one step in the wrong direction, the snake could bite me, and I would likely die. But how could I escape?
